LEARN TO PLAY PIANO

Imagine how proud your child will feel when they play the piano for family and friends.

Kids feel accepted, empowered and confident inside MY PIANO TREE small studio.

GETTING STARTED

Before you decide on a piano teacher, it’s important that you know what direction you want to go when learning to play the piano.

Traditional classical piano lessons focus on

  • reading and interpreting sheet music written for both hands
  • playing the piano using the proper technique -hand, arm and body movements/gestures – to produce beautiful tones and avoid injuries.

Alternatively,  jazz style piano training focuses on

  • learning to play and build chords
  • improvisation, and sometimes playing by ear
  • understanding music theory, and how chords function within a given key

It’s great to learn both, but unless you have unlimited practice time, decide which direction is more important to you.

Before you sign up with a piano teacher, ask which of these styles they specialize in

What are the benefits of playing piano?

If you haven’t heard about the many benefits of playing a musical instrument, you have only to search the internet to discover what is known now about the impact that performing music has on people of all ages.

The cognitive benefits of playing a musical instrument is highlighted in this video by Anita Collins.

I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.

Kids and Teens

Playing the piano is fun!

Boys and girls who are able to sit down on the bench and play piano, can entertain those around them, impressing their friends and family.

With exposure to different genres/styles of music, they learn to appreciate a variety of music and to interpret what they read and play it with artistry and expression.

Performing in recitals with their peers, playing duets with their teacher and each other,  accompanying singers or other musicians–participation in all of these builds confidence and self-esteem in even the most timid and shy child.

Adults and Retirees

It is never too late to learn!

It is true that children absorb new information quickly.   But adults have some advantages over children, when learning new skills,  like how to play the piano.

Executive functions, such as the ability to practice self-discipline and to manage priorities, are more developed in adults.  An adult is often highly motivated to progress in their piano playing.   They have voluntarily started piano lessons, they are paying for their lessons and are more aware of the importance of making progress!

Working with a teacher who is patient and takes the time to understand your goals and your learning style, is important.    Your teacher should challenge you with repertoire that helps you “stretch”, while maintaining balance and taking your personal taste into account.

Adults have so much to gain by learning to play the piano!
